Primary Investigator: Wei Gao, a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science, earned her Ph.D. in chemistry from Rice University in 2012. She did her postdoctoral research in the Materials Physics & Applications (MPA) Division at Los Alamos National Lab, as a Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow. She obtained her B.S. and M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from Nanjing University, China.

Graduate Students:


Qin Pan: attended Zhejiang University in China where she earned her BS degree in Polymer Science and MS degree in Materials Engineering. She will start PhD at NC State in Aug 2015 and join the group to study graphene/graphene oxide materials and its application in energy conversion and storage.


Nanfei He: a graduate student pursuing Ph.D. in Fiber & Polymer Science. Nanfei earned her B.S. in Textile Engineering and M.S. in Nonwoven Materials and Engineering from Donghua University, China. She is experienced in fiber science and nonwoven material. She is working on the integration of graphene/graphene oxide and various textiles.


Yixin Liu: previous a 3 + X student from Jiangnan University, China. Admitted by College of Textile as a Textile Chemistry MS student at the end of 2014. He is pursuing his MS degree in Dr. Harold  Freeman’s group and working on the synthesis of dimer reactive dyes for higher affinity to cotton. He will join Dr. Wei Gao’s group and pursue his Ph.D in Fiber and Polymer Science after his graduation of MS degree in summer 2016.

Visiting Scholars:


Fanglan Guan, currently a lecture in material science and engineering department ,Beijing institute of fashion technology, is an expert in textile physical finishing and textile printing. She will work on the integration of energy storage devices onto textiles.


Guixia Wang:A lecturer in Analytical Chemistry, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Luoyang Normal University, China. She has been working on synthesis and characterization of molybdenum disulfide nanosheets and the direct electron transfer mechanism of heme proteins. She obtained her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 2013 from Nanjing University, China. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry, Beijing Normal University, China in 2006. She will join Dr. Gao’s group as a visiting scholar in summer 2016.

Master Students:


Ningjun Tong: a master student from Jiangnan University, China, pursing MS in Textile Engineering. I came to North Carolina State University through “3+X” program in August, 2015, and I loved this beautiful city and our well-known college. My research interests lie in conductive polymers and graphene-based fibers, and their applications in supercapacitors.

Lili Yang

Lili Yang: a graduate student pursuing M.S. degree in Textile Engineering. She earned her B.E. in Nonwoven Material and Engineering from Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and came to NCSU as a 3+X student in Fall 2015. She is going to work on wet-spinning of GO fibers for super-capacitor applications.



Vahid Babaahmadi is a Ph.D. student in Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Iran. Currently, he is working on “Synthesis and application of reduced graphene oxide on polyester fabric to obtain multifunctional textile”. He was born in Yazd, Iran (1987), He earned his B.Sc. in textile chemistry and fiber science from Yazd University, Iran (2005-2009) and then he earned his M.Sc. in same field from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Iran (2009-2011).
